Mal hurried to lunch, and found her friends sitting at an almost empty table, a rapidly cooling plate of food between them.

She was a little surprised to see Nik and Leela together again, but it seemed that after their heart-to-heart last night, Nik had decided that Mal—and whoever was with her—were his friends.

Mal sank into her seat with a hurried, “thanks,” and proceeded to stuff her face until the bell rang.

As they ran for their next class, with Mal still chewing, Leela couldn’t hold her tongue any longer.

“So? What happened with the Principal?”

“This is the second time you’ve been to visit the Principal in two days,” Nik broke in. “Please tell me you’re not in trouble already!”

Mal swallowed her last mouthful of food with an effort.

“Guys, nothing happened! The Principal—”

They burst into their high school English class, almost ten minutes late, and then there was no time to talk.

“I’ll text you,” Mal hissed to Leela, and Nik opened his mouth, looking upset. “You too!”

Twenty minutes later, when Mal had pulled out her textbooks and settled into class, she surreptitiously powered her new phone on, but almost immediately, the teacher called on her.

After that, she didn’t get a free moment to talk to Nik or Leela for the next three hours, as high school Chemistry and Geography came and went.

By the time Mal trudged to dinner, she was exhausted. Leela was annoyingly chipper, as usual, but Nik seemed as subdued as she was, complaining about the homework they were now expected to do.

After they’d had their dinner, and wrestled with their Chemistry homework, Mal and Leela fell into bed, too tired to talk much.

Mal had almost drifted off to sleep, when she remembered that she hadn’t answered her friends’ questions from lunch.

“Hey, Leela, you awake?”

A soft snore was her only reply.
